Ride review: A group of 5 showed up for this ride, TJ, GW, RD, TC, & GP. The weather was quite hot, but the roads on the route along many reservoirs and rivers along with a pretty reasonable pace kept us comfortable. We took a loop in Cold Spring, and we also took a quick detour up Bear Mountain. Seven Lakes drive was enjoyable with many curves and plenty of shade. We arrived at the Ren Faire and managed to find parking, (Free for bikes I might add, $5.00 for cars) After Roast Beast sandwiches and a Turkey leg, plus cool drinks we started to explore thy kingdom. We saw 2 Black Bears, and a porcupine. At one point we were verbally attacked by a vendor who wanted us to throw tomatoes at him. He asked us which of us was the "Power Bottom" and made fun of our attire. instead of being enraged, we were amused. Our return trip was interesting, I think we would have enjoyed the faire if the weather was 15 degrees cooler. I may plan a return trip before Sept23rd.
Sunday September 16th 2007 Was Tommy & J.R.'s Ride to Gay Day at Six Flags Great Adventure. Report:
For those of you who missed our ride today (now
yesterday), it was attended by 9 of us, JR, Tommy,
Brad (JR's BF), TJ,TC, Keith, Bobby, Dan, and
me.
The weather was a bit cool in the morning, but was
nice during the day, also the ride home was pretty
cool, Keith noted it was about 42 degrees in West
Cornwall this (yesterday) AM. The route was scenic
and relatively traffic free, Thanks to JR!
Tha Park was packed with red tee shirts, and there
where an abundance of studly men of all ages. The Bay
State Marauders had a sizable group as did the
Ursamen. For those of you into facial hair, there
where plenty of guys with mustaches, goatees, and
beards. Wish I had taken some pictures myself, but
most of the photos are courtesy of TC.
Lines for rides where pretty long, some members rode
the Batman coaster, the Mind Erasure.
We listened to part of the concert, and spoke with
Gary Turner who organizes this event with the people
at Six Flags.
After picking up our free group picture, we headed out
to the bikes to mount up and ride home. Seems Bobbys
Scooter had a very weak battery that would not turn
over the engine. It was thought his alarm may have
caused the battery drain, but that was not confirmed.
We polled the group and no one had jumper cables.
After looking at the location of his battery, I
determined it would be possible to remove the battery
from my bike very easily, and I could hold my
battery up to his battery touching each positive and
negative terminal together eliminating the need for
jumper cables, once his scooter was started I was
hopeful he could get home on the scooters charging
system. Well, we made it almost out to the parking
lot exit when the scooter stalled again. This time
about four of us pulled over and I again took out my
battery to jump start his scooter for the second time.
We split traffic to the street where a traffic cop
started to yell at Bobby for riding between the
waiting line of cars, Bobby tried to explain to the
cop that he was having trouble, and the cop finally
waived us out into the street. We headed south, and
it was decided that Bobby, myself and Dan would try to
get on the highway asap to prevent another stall. It
would figure that our bikes and scooter would need gas
very soon, We exited at # 38 of I-91, but the Mobil
Gas was closed for new fuel tanks, and they seemed
like the only game off exit 38. The scooter began to
sputter, and it was decided that we would cross over
to the Price Chopper to see if they had a set of
jumper cables for sale. They did not, so again out
came my battery, and this time I removed the fuse for
his head light in the hopes that he could get farther
along this time. Bobby and Dan rode down to exit 37,
while I reinstalled my battery in my Bike. I
caught up with Bobby and Dan at a Sunoco station where
the filled their tanks and bought a pair of jumper
cables. I filled up with gas, and for the fourth time
I jump started his scooter. Now we noticed I had lost
my low beam headlight, and was only left with a
functioning High Beam. Not to be out done and
possibly the result of some sort of mechanical
jealousy, Dans Honda lost its headlight low beam
too. So now we have two bikes and a scooter, the
scooter with out any headlights and the two bike with
no low beam. We Proceeded to head about 15 miles to
Scooter Centrale in Plainville CT to drop off Bobbys
scooter. Luckily the have two doors to a hallway so
you can leave your scooter for service, also luckily,
Dan now lives very near Bobby in Deep River, so after
a hot cup of coffee he took Bobby home.
OCTOBER 2007
Rick & Jerrys
Great Bar-B-Que Ride is Sunday
October 14th. Meeting time is 10:00 AM, Meeting location is The Saybrook Fishhouse in Canton CT.
Review:
The day started out at about 42 degrees, and it didn't get a whole lot warmer, although the barometer was over 30.0 and climbing, Ride Capt. Rick pulled over about 1 hour from Shaker Mountain to re-access the ride as the clouds where getting very dark, and clear skies where in the opposite direction. The group decided to head east before the sky opened up. Although we didn't have
Bar-B-Que, we all enjoyed hot soup with our meals as we warmed up. So much for Perforated Leather! BRRRR!
Sunday November 4th at 11:00 AM is our Vanilla Bean Ride to Pomfret CT. Being led by past Director Mark. Meet at 11:00 AM at Cycle Gear in Manchester CT
